ELIZABETH HARPER

“The camera is afluid way of encountering that other reality”. - Jerry Uelsmann

I grew up in a darkroom made by my father in Kentucky. He taught me what an enlarger was and how to print and stain my clothes with developer. I guess you could say it’s in my genes. I always ran around with a camera and took pictures at camp and on vacations.

I then took that love for photography and studied basic techniques in college at Elon University back in 1994. Years later I decided that is what I wanted to do with my life and enrolled at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA.  My first day at Brooks it was said, this is a technical school not a creative school and I was ready to learn.

Three years later I took my knowledge and set off to make a career out of it. I assisted for year and decided that I wanted to be the main photographer, so I established Lady E Photography as a business. I now am a full time freelance photographer.

I have always found beauty in everything I see, and I love the urban grit of Chicago. The images are produced on a technique called Fotoflot. They are printed on Fuji Crystal Archival Professional Type C paper and mounted on 3mm charcoal gray acrylic. A layer of acrylic mounted on top is available to produce a glossy and 3 Dimensional feel. My work has been described as strong, feminine, open, dark, raw and unusual.
